THE
BOTTOM LINE: Gold Beach Lumber price motion this week:
Trending Up for the Summer Season |
|
|

|
|
OSB Lumber Prices: OSB activity continued to steady
last week. Mills have curtailed a fair amount of production and
availability is pushing into late July. If you need OSB between
now and Labor Day, then we suggest you buy it. We suggest an
eight week inventory.
|
|
|
Western Plywood Lumber Prices: Western plywood mills
sold better as they became more attractive following the rush on
Pine panels. Demand was slack locally. Mills who extended order
files three weeks, pushed numbers $5-10. Speculative activity
picked up a little and the general tone was more optimistic than
any time this year. Order files are two to three weeks, with
underlayment and thicker panels the furthest out. Recommend
dealers maintain medium inventory. |
|
|
Western SPF Lumber Prices: Sales of western spruce
lumber were flat last week and mills held their prices firm.
Some lumber items are very tight, but 2x4#2 is not and is
feeling some price pressure. Secondaries with 2x4 purchased
below mill replacement cost, possibly having a basis cushion,
are offering at lower levels - creating our two tiered market.
Expect prices to remain level this week.
|
|
|
Treated Lumber Prices: Pricing of treated dimension
continues to firm. Decking was flat and timbers were flat to up
a little. Business was steady with suppliers as the deck season
is in full swing. Look for more of the same in upcoming weeks |
|
|
Coastal Dimension Lumber Prices
Green Dimension: No Report.
Dry Dimension: Western US dry dimension mills
had a good week. Prices advanced on all items as demand
continued to out strip supply. Buyers found sourcing even
routine inquiries difficult, as production cutbacks limited
offerings. Look for supply to remain a concern as production
cutbacks are in full effect. |
|
WEEKLY LUMBER & PANEL NOTES: What a difference a week
can make. Plywood and OSB supply reductions are pushing order
files out and prices higher. Several mills are quoting
defensively, or have temporarily pulled off the market. Expect
this scenario to continue with mills slowly moving prices
higher.
On the lumber side, mills are leaning on order files to keep
prices firm to higher, depending on species and dimension.
Expect this trend to continue as we approach summer shutdowns.
|
|
|
Transportation / Retail Diesel Fuel:
Trucking service remains prompt. Lead times for trucks averaged
just over one day last week in most areas. Service on shipments
originating in the South, however, continues to be slower -most
orders are requiring 2-3 days to be shipped.
Diesel fuel prices continue to trend higher; the average retail
price was $2.626 per gallon last week. Declining freight volumes
have carriers scrambling to keep fleets loaded; and the
sustained energy price increases will force carriers to exit the
business, likely extending lead times and pressuring freight
rates higher. We forecast lead times for trucks will average 1.5
days for most parts of the country during the next 30 days.
